Dr. Ken Copeland read the address his father, previous Mount Vernon school superintendent Dr. K. B. Copeland, delivered during the original dedication service of the bus wreck memorial shown in the background. A memorial service was conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, the 50th anniversary of the bus wreck in which eight teachers and students of Mount Vernon schools perished . More than 80 people attended the ceremony at the memorial, located adjacent to the school drive.
