Law enforcement officials called off an unsuccessful man hunt on the northwestern edge of Mount Vernon City Limits around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, March 23.
Despite quick response from local law enforcement and use of a Department of Public Safety helicopter unit out of Garland, the suspect apparently slipped through the security perimeter.
The incident began at 3:34 p.m. when a man driving a 1991 Chevy Caprice reportedly fled from Trooper Ryan Case with the Sulphur Springs office of the Department of Public Safety. The trooper had attempted a traffic stop after his radar indicated the vehicle was traveling 88 mile per hour.
The attempted speeding stop quickly escalated to fleeing with speeds reaching 125 miles per hour. The trooper called ahead for assistance from law enforcement in Franklin County.
The search began around 4:45 p.m. after the driver lost control of the vehicle and wrecked. Franklin County Deputy Robert Zinn threw traffic spikes onto Hwy. 37, just north of the intersection of Hwy. 67 and Main St. In an attempt to avoid the spikes, the driver sent the vehicle into a spin. It then slid across the north bound traffic lane and came to a stop in the ditch on the east side of Hwy. 37. See the April 1 edition of the Optic-Herald for more details.
