The City of Mount Vernon has privitized its building code inspections, hiring a firm called Bureau Veritas. Members of the city council also approved a change in inspection and review fees at its June meeting.
The update of the ordinance adjusting the fees is in keeping with the policy set earlier by the council that taxpayers not subsidize these services, City Administrator Lee Elliott told the council. “We have now reached a zero sum cost to taxpayers for these services,” Mr. Elliott said. “In addition, we have well qualified inspectors reviewing the projects to make sure they meet existing codes and are safe.” The city has used Bureau Veritas, which Texas offices in Plano and Houston, to do inspections and project plan reviews since January.
