The Mount Vernon City Council is expected to review and possibly adopt a new version of a tree ordinance at its July meeting. This version has potential for passage, according to members of the council.
This version deals only with trees, either on public property or along public roads and utility rights-of-way.
The newest version of the controversial ordinance was reviewed at last week’s council workshop meeting. Jennifer Meyer, external affairs manager, and Craig Harland, a distribution system and forestry specialist with SWEPCO, were on hand to discuss portions of the proposed ordinance. The proposed ordinance in part aims at protection of “heritage trees” along city easements, rights-of-way and within parks, public areas or other real property owned by the City of Mount Vernon. See the July 1 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald for more information. Please leave a comment to let us and the City Council know how you feel on this issue.
