Flags across the country are to be flown at half staff Saturday, Sept. 11 for the National day of Service and Remembrance and Patriot Day.
Texans may join in a national minute of silence at 7:46 a.m. (8:46 EDT). The minute of silence coincides with the time the first airplane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001.
Both special day designations for the date were made to honor those who died as a result of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. in 2001.
By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as Patriot Day, and by Public Law 111-13, approved April 21, 2009, has requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and Remembrance.
