Mark Griffin of the Winnsboro Volunteer Fire Department sprays retardant onto a 16 cylinder diesel engine belonging to the Kansas City Southern railroad as Jean Patterson of the South Franklin Fire Department watches. A fire started in the engine compartment as the train traveled through Scroggins in southern Franklin County on Thursday, May 12. Inset, the fire was hot enough to completely melt the train horns.
