Tanks removed

Print

Tanks removedRichard Hamrick and Melvin Norfleet watch as a back hoe is used to excavate the area on Main and Holbrook streets where buried tanks were found. Contractor/developer Richard Hamrick called the three tanks, “ghost tanks.” No one knew they were there. They were not registered with the Environmental Protection Agency or any other state agency, he reported.
The tanks were used by a fuel station at that corner in the 1930s and early 1940s. A photo of the station was found by Richard Hamrick, who purchased the buildings just last month. Environmental soil testing was conducted at the site. For results from the test, see the July 21 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
