School board struggles to maintain tax rate, services

Print

Since learning last November that the state would reduce school funding, Superintendent John Kaufman and members of the Mount Vernon ISD School Board have taken steps to reduce their overall budget. The district has been advised they will receive $713,000 less this year in state funding. That is a 19 percent decrease for the district. Next year, they will receive $1,074,000 less than 2010-2011, which will cause further cuts to be taken.
“Why is our percentage decrease so high when schools like Dallas ISD are only being reduced like five percent?” Board member Richard Carr asked. For details from the July 28 board meeting, see the Aug. 4 edition of the Mount Vernon Optic-Herald.
